There's so much talk about the craft of writing and the creative process, and one of the last steps is always, "PROOFREAD!" And just when you think you have PROOFREAD! your work to the best of your ability, you print out your story to share with your writing group and find two typos in the first paragraph. Sigh.
Even if you aren't a small details person, you can learn to be a better proofreader, keeping in mind, of course, that before moving forward with any type of publication or submission that you'll want to enlist a second set of eyes to assist in proofreading.
